squarePEG was a Practice as Research project conducted by Barton in 2015.
This practical research project explores the experience of being dyslexic, aiming to communicate that experience to an audience through performance. This project drew on the personal experience of the choreographer and was informed by both practice as research and primary research. An interview was conducted with a dyslexic student to inform the research process. Uniquely, the interviewee was also a collaborator on this project and wrote and performed poetry in the performance titled squarePEG at Bath Spa University Theatre on 24th March 2015. The project highlights the significance of the devising process itself; at key moments within this process, Somatic techniques and theatrical devices emerged that informed and developed the work. This enabled the researcher to portray the very sense of what it is to be a square peg in a round hole.
